Technical Debt Series: Unstructured Cabling

Data Centre Transition Challenges

We’ve seen many challenges with data centre transitions over the years including cabinets stuck in sunken asphalt  and elevators malfunctioning. These are some examples of  uncommon issues a trusted service provider like Prosedium can help resolve quickly from experience.

There is one challenge that stands out above the rest that is easily avoidable with simple discipline in place within your IT department around physical design and change management.

The Risk and Cost To Your Business

Plain and simple unstructured cabling results in downstream technical debt that ends up introducing risk during major data centre relocations and incremental device installations or decommissions.

When there are physical changes to your infrastructure there are few tasks that become difficult when there is a spaghetti mess of CAT5/6, fiber, SCSI and/or power cables:

  • Accessing the rack elevation slots
  • Accessing PDU’s
  • Locating an existing cable that needs to be changed (e.g. MACD Actions)
  • Adding a new cable to rack

Moving these cables around to access the rack can cause one of them to become dislodged. This risk, when realized, can cost expensive downtime to a network or business critical applications. How much does a minute of downtime cost to your organization? I’m sure its much more than what it costs to mitigate the risk of unstructured cabling. More on this in an upcoming blog post.

Most IT personnel don’t value a properly organized cable systems within your cabinets and racks and may not have the capability or skill-set to do so and lack the passion to proactively fix it until something goes wrong.
